Work out where the problem is

  1. Try another device. If only one device is affected, restart it and switch its Wi-Fi off and back on.
  2. Move closer to the modem. If the connection improves, distance or obstacles are weakening the signal.
  3. Restart the modem. Turn it off at the power point, wait a minute, then turn it back on and allow it to reconnect.
  4. Check the internet connection. If every device is offline even beside the modem, use the Internet troubleshooting guide.

Hints & tips

  • Place the modem in the open and as centrally as practical—not inside a cupboard, behind the TV or on the floor.
  • Thick walls, metal, mirrors and distance can all reduce Wi-Fi coverage.
  • The faster 5 GHz Wi-Fi band is excellent nearby; 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther through a house.
  • For a large or long home, a properly positioned mesh Wi-Fi system may work better than one modem.
